Mastering Sudoku: 5 Pro Techniques for Faster Solving

Sudoku is more than just a game of numbers; it's a game of logic and pattern recognition. Once you've mastered the basics, you'll need more advanced techniques to tackle harder puzzles. Here are five pro tips to help you speed up your solving time.

1. The "Naked Pair" Strategy A naked pair occurs when two cells in the same row, column, or 3x3 box contain exactly the same two candidates. Because those two numbers must go in those two cells, you can eliminate them as candidates from all other cells in that same unit.

2. Look for "Hidden Singles" A hidden single is a candidate that appears only once in a row, column, or box, even if other candidates are present in the same cell. Identifying these early can unlock stuck grids.

3. Use Pencil Marks Efficiently Don't mark every possible number in every cell. Focus on "Snyder Notation"—only marking a candidate if it appears exactly twice in a 3x3 box. This keeps your grid clean and helps you spot pairs quickly.

4. Scanning the Grid Instead of looking at individual cells, scan entire rows and columns for missing numbers. Train your eyes to see the "empty" spaces and the numbers that constrain them simultaneously.

5. Practice Regularly The best way to improve is consistency. Try to solve at least one daily puzzle to keep your pattern recognition sharp.
